Gerry Evans fell in love with the sea growing up in the Welsh seaside town of Aberystwyth and at the age of 16, he joined the British merchant navy and Shipping Out: A Merchant Sailor’s Tale is his story.
Evans was a boy when he shipped out but along the way matured into a man and made his way to New Zealand, where he eventually became the 2006 Writer-in-Residence at the Michael King Writers’ Centre in Auckland.
Shipping Out is an enchanting tale of his adventures, of exotic destinations, rogue captains, fun, fear and excitement.
His time sailing under the red duster shaped who he was to become and this book is something of a coming-of-age tale.
It’s an easy read that gives an interesting look at Evans’ life.
