■ REVIEW: Exit Music
Fresh from start to finish

Ian Rankin has produced another intriguing and compelling Inspector Rebus murder mystery in this book.

The inspector is tying up loose ends as he nears retirement but a dead Russian poet changes his plans. On the surface, the Russian’s death appears to be a mugging gone wrong but a little digging on the part of Rebus and a nasty second killing make it obvious that something more sinister is going on.

Exit Music marks the end of the main character’s career in the police force and also provides a harsh commentary on money, power and murder.

It’s easy to see why Rankin is the United Kingdom’s No 1 best-selling crime writer: this book is every bit as fresh at the first in the series.

Exit Music, by Ian Rankin (Orion, RRP $36.99)
