Here’s my 2 cents worth …

Cents don't make sense: US coins are weird.

My first trip the America was a baffling experience when it came to the money: what’s up with those coins? The cents don’t make sense!

The Aussie coins are bad enough, with the $2 coin being so much smaller than the $1, but the Americans have inflicted us with a 5c coin that’s bigger than the 10c, and terminology that involves more thinking than I’m happy with for 5c and 10c (nickels and dimes …. ugh. A quarter I understand, but why nickels and dimes?)

Oh, and a day of sightseeing and spending results in a wallet that weighs a ton as it becomes loaded down with a gazillion 1c and 5c coins. Yes, 1c.  I thought I’d managed to offload the coins I’d accumulated while I was there, dumping them into a charity bucket, but on arriving home found a bunch of them still tucked away in pockets and bags.

John Green, author of The Fault in Our Stars, is no great fan of the minor denominations when it comes to coins, as you can see in the video above. However, he is also on the  hunt for some NZ 5c coins. I’m not sure why, but he is. Hit him up if you can help.
