Australian author Nikki Gemmell has a great handle on delivering well-written erotica. A co-worker introduced her work to me last year, lending me With My Body and then, shortly after, The Bride Stripped Bare. Each story had me completely captivated.
When I picked up Gemmell’s latest book, I Take You, I didn’t realise it was a companion to the previous books I had read. However, after making my way quickly through it, it became obvious.
Carrying on the common thread of a women exploring their sexuality, I Take You is a modern retelling of D H Lawrence’s Lady Chatterly’s Lover.
Connie is trapped in an unhappy marriage with a vicious and overpowering man. Unable to have a truly happy life, Connie’s true awakening comes when she meets Mel, a gardener in her local communal garden.
Not for everyone, I Take You is a better alternative to that terrible Fifty Shades of Grey trilogy.
Gemmell has a better grasp on the English language, an unusual but welcome structure and a unique storytelling voice.
