Explaining Anzac Day

Wearing the Poppy, by A J Toledo (HarperCollins, RRP $19.99):

This is a fantastic book for young Kiwis who want to know more about just what Anzac Day is all about.

A moving and fascinating explanation of how the red poppy came to symbolise this special day in our nation’s history, Wearing the Poppy is the story of our first Anzacs, told through the experiences of one family. The story is built with letters, diaries, photos and — most importantly — memories.

The author uses the wartime experiences of her own family to bring to life a defining moment in New Zealand history.

Every year I see more and more families at our dawn parade here in Invercargill, proving that there is certainly a need for this book, which honours and remembers the experiences of our grandfathers and great-grandfathers.
