Sibling rivalry from beyond the grave

The Possession of Mr Cave,

by Matt Haig (Random House, RRP $34.99):

Terence Cave is a man who has had more than his share of tragedies: his mother’s suicide when he was a young child, his wife’s death during a bungled burglary of their antiques shop and now the death of his son Reuben in an awful accident.

It is this final death that proves to be the most significant. Reuben appears to have taken possession of his father and is trying to bring harm to his twin sister Bryony, the favoured child of the two, the golden girl who seems to have captured her father’s heart and been given all she ever wanted.

Terence realises his one mission in life now is to keep his daughter safe at any cost but Bryony’s mission in life would appear to be to put herself in harm’s way at every opportunity.

It took me a while to get into this one but by the end of it I was hooked.
