Tracking our rail history

Last Train To Paradise, by Graham Hutchins (Exisle Publishing, RRP $50):

This celebratory account of a time when train travel was the most accepted way of getting around New Zealand looks at the halcyon days of New Zealand rail, at a time when lines existed between most provincial towns and famous visitors such as Mark Twain and Lord Kitchener frequented the network.

The author experienced this time personally and his passion for the era and the mode of transport shines through.

This is both a walk down memory lane and a fascinating history lesson, depending on your age.
