Lots of surprises in this cracking read

Sharp Objects
By Gillian Flynn (Weidenfeld & Nicolson, $36.99)

When two young girls are abducted and killed, reporter Camille Preaker is sent back to her home town to cover the case.

The daughter of one of the richest families in the town, Camille, is haunted by a childhood tragedy that estranged her from her mother but suddenly finds herself back in her family’s mansion, re-acquainting herself with her mother and half-sister she barely knows.

Working alongside the cops, she finds the murder of the two girls isn’t the only mystery to worry about.

This is an absolute cracker of a story and will keep you riveted until the very last page, which seems to arrive too soon.

Best of all, it manages to keep its secrets well-hidden, springing them on the reader when least expected.
