A little too familiar by the final chapters

Bones, by Jonathan Kellerman (Headline, RRP $38.99):

This book presented me with a bit of a dilemma: I enjoy a good, old-fashioned murder mystery and for the most part, Jonathan Kellerman writes well enough. However, by the end of the book, the whole thing just felt a little too formulaic.

There’s enough in this latest offering in the Alex Delaware series to keep the interest up, from murdered women with missing hands and mysterious bones sold at auction to missing millionaires and dodgy caretakers with patchy pasts.

Delaware is a psychologist who helps homicide detective Milo Sturgis with a range of nasty cases, and this one is shaping up to be particularly nasty.

Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed the book. Mostly. It was just that by the final few chapters I felt like I’d been there before. I suspect it’s a book I’d have enjoyed more if I hadn’t already read earlier efforts by the same author.
