Four-legged hero honoured

Caesar: The True Story of a Canine ANZAC Hero, by Patricia Stroud (HarperCollins, RRP $26.99):

Caesar was the New Zealand Rifle Brigade’s mascot, a bulldog with attitude and courage.

Trained as a Red Cross dog, Caesar rescued wounded soldiers from no man’s land. Like most dogs, he did what he did out of loyalty and trust.

This story has been written by the great-niece of Caesar’s handler and is something of a reprint of a book published a few years back for the younger reader. This time around, Caesar’s story has been expanded to include Gallipoli and the Western Desert.

Personal anecdotes and accounts bring life and colour to Caesar’s story and show that this remarkable dog truly was an Anzac hero.
