Waking up to Joe Bennett

Fish Like a Drink, by Joe Bennett (HarperCollins, RRP $25):

Joe Bennett is one of those columnists who always manages to improve my mood: if I’m having a rough morning, I always feel better having read his latest offering in the paper on a Wednesday morning.

And if I’m already having a pretty splendiferous morning, his weekly column makes it even better.

No matter what the subject, he manages to inject a delightful balance of humour along with the common sense in tackling every subject.

Since his last collection of columns was published in book form, Bennett has been dealing with the Canterbury quakes and their red-tape ridden aftermath with a level of wit and stubborness that is to be admired.

This book is a collection of a further 45 of his columns that will no doubt make your day a little more cheery, too.
