Fun tale of a geriatric delinquent

Gangsta Granny, by David Walliams, illustrated by Tony Ross (HarperCollins, RRP $25):

It’s refreshing to find a book aimed at younger readers that doesn’t focus on either girls and horses or teens and vampires.

Little Britain star David Walliams has followed up on his earlier successful children’s books with this latest offering, Gangsta Granny.

This hilarious story of old age features plenty of adventure and the lesson that being old doesn’t mean being boring.

Ben’s granny is pretty much like any other granny you would expect to meet, complete with white hair and false teeth. However, she’s also an international jewel thief.

I’m certainly not the target audience for this book – in fact I’m nearly four decades away from being the target demographic – but it’s one of those books that will become a family favourite and parents will enjoy it every bit as much as their children.

This is Walliams’ fourth novel for children and certainly lives up to the standards of the earlier three and it is easy to see why some reviewers have called him this generation’s Roald Dahl.
