A bit like Eat, Pray, Love … but better

Heavenly Hirani’s School of Laughing Yoga,
by Sarah-Kate Lynch (Random House, RRP $38):

As a disclaimer, let me just say that I’m probably not the target audience for New Zealand novelist and magazine columnist Sarah-Kate Lynch’s books, and the one of her books I have read didn’t really float my boat.

However, Lynch’s latest book has made me more of a fan.

Against her better judgment, Annie Jordan ends up in India and finds some life lessons she wasn’t expecting. Annie had never had any desire to visit India, a land with too many people and too much poverty. And too many smells that made her suspicious and uncomfortable.

The author herself had much the same feeling as her novel’s lead character, so when her husband announced they were off to Mumbai, she wasn’t entirely happy about the situation. However, that trip ended up inspiring and providing the setting for this novel.

The books has a bit of an Eat, Pray, Love feel to it, but is a little less earnest and with an injection of humour. Always a good option.

It’s probably still not my book style of choice, but a good option to pick up for light holiday reading.
