The secret revealed?

June 23, 2007

The Secret, by Rhonda Byrne (HarperCollins, $39.99):

Falling into the self-help category, this book claims to reveal the secret that has been passed down through the ages, a secret that has been understood by the likes of Plato, Galileo, Beethoven, Einstein and other scientists, theologians and great thinkers.

The idea is that you release the hidden, untapped power within you.

Whether you believe in this or not, The Secret is interesting reading and is full of positive affirmations and pushes the reader towards positive visualisation.

I know Oprah and a whole bunch of other celebrities have jumped on the bandwagon with this one and are full of excitement over just how successful this system is. However, I’m possibly not as convinced as Oprah that chucking together a dream board with pictures of the things I want will make them appear.

If you ignore all the celeb hype and just look at the basic message being conveyed though, it’s quite a sensible concept: be positive. And by the end of the book I have to admit I did feel a tad more enthusiastic about life in general.

I’ve always believed that if you go through life expecting the worst, that’s probably what you will get. Expect something a little better and chances are, you won’t be disappointed. I’m not sure whether that means I’m following the teachings of The Secret but being one of life’s optimists isn’t a bad thing, surely?

The Secret has also been released on DVD.
